About the book The Gift of the Magi
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry is a short but poignant story about love, sacrifice, and the true spirit of giving. The story centers on a young married couple, Jim and Della, who are deeply in love with one another but are struggling financially. They live in a modest apartment and have very little money to spare, yet they are determined to give each other a special gift for Christmas. Della, who has beautiful long hair, is particularly concerned about finding the perfect gift for Jim, but she only has $1.87 to spend. After much thought, she decides to sell her hair to a wig maker for $20, a small fortune for her, but enough to buy Jim a gift she thinks he will cherish: a fine chain for his prized pocket watch, an heirloom he treasures deeply.
Meanwhile, Jim, who also wants to surprise Della with a meaningful gift, faces the same dilemma. He decides to sell his most valued possession: his pocket watch, which is the last remnant of his family’s wealth. With the money he receives from selling the watch, he buys a beautiful set of combs for Della’s hair, combs she has long admired but never been able to afford. On Christmas Eve, the couple exchanges their gifts, and their joy quickly turns to sorrow when they realize that their sacrifices have rendered the gifts they bought for each other useless. Della, with no long hair to wear the combs, cannot use them, and Jim, without his watch, has no use for the chain.
Despite the irony of their situation, the story highlights the depth of their love and the selflessness of their actions. In the end, their sacrifice for each other is portrayed not as foolishness, but as a beautiful expression of love. O. Henry’s twist, where both Jim and Della unknowingly give up their most prized possessions to buy gifts for each other, underscores the theme that the best gifts come from the heart, and that love and sacrifice are the most valuable things one can give. Through this story, O. Henry suggests that even when material gifts are rendered meaningless by circumstance, the love behind them is what truly matters. The story ends with a message that their love for each other is the greatest gift of all.
