Max lived in a cozy house with his mom, dad, and his fluffy orange cat, Whiskers. Max loved to play with his toys, build tall block towers, and read books. But when the sun went down, Max had one big worry.
âThereâs a monster under my bed,â Max whispered every night. His mom would tuck him in, and his dad would read him a story. Whiskers would curl up by his feet, purring softly. But Max still felt nervous.
âMax, there are no monsters,â his mom always said, smiling. âItâs just your imagination.â
But Max wasnât so sure.
One night, after everyone said goodnight, Max heard a soft noise. It sounded like a sniffle. He sat up in his bed and looked around. The room was dark except for the light from his night lamp, which made soft shadows on the walls.
âDid you hear that, Whiskers?â Max whispered. But Whiskers just yawned and stretched.
Max grabbed his flashlight from his bedside table. He leaned over and slowly peeked under his bed. Thatâs when he saw itâa pair of big, round eyes staring back at him.
âEek!â Max squealed, dropping his flashlight.
The eyes blinked. Then, to Maxâs surprise, a soft voice said, âOh no, please donât be scared.â
Max blinked. âDid you just⊠talk?â
The creature under the bed crawled out, revealing itself. It was a small, round monster with soft, fuzzy fur, big ears, and tiny horns. It had a silly smile and wobbly arms.
âHi,â the monster said shyly. âIâm Mo. I live under your bed.â
Max stared, but Mo didnât seem scary at all. âYouâre⊠youâre the monster under my bed?â
âYep,â Mo said, looking a little embarrassed. âBut Iâm not really a scary monster. Actually, Iâm afraid of the dark.â
Max was surprised. âYouâre afraid of the dark? But you live under my bed! Itâs always dark there.â
Mo nodded sadly. âI know. Thatâs why I snuffle and sniffle. Itâs too dark and lonely under there.â
Max thought about it. âWhy donât you come out? My room isnât dark, see?â He pointed to his night lamp.
Mo peeked around. âIt does look cozy up here.â
Max smiled. âDo you like stories? My dad just read me one about a dragon.â
Moâs eyes lit up. âI love stories!â
Max picked up his book and started to read. Mo listened, his big ears twitching with every word. Whiskers even joined, curling up next to Mo and purring softly.
âYou have a nice voice,â Mo said. âYou make the dragon sound friendly.â
Max giggled. âThanks! I like dragons, even the ones that look a little scary.â
Mo nodded. âThatâs how I feel, too. I look scary, but Iâm not.â
After the story, Max yawned. âI think itâs bedtime now,â he said, feeling sleepy. âBut you can stay here if you want.â
Mo looked around. âAre you sure? I donât want to bother you.â
Max nodded. âYouâre not scary, Mo. And you donât have to be afraid anymore.â
Mo smiled, showing his tiny teeth. âThank you, Max. Youâre the first friend Iâve ever had.â
Max helped Mo make a little bed next to his own, using an extra blanket. Whiskers snuggled up next to Mo, who looked so happy.
âYouâre not a monster,â Max said with a smile. âYouâre just Mo.â
Mo grinned. âAnd youâre Max. The best kid I know.â
Max turned off his flashlight and snuggled into his bed. Mo felt safe and warm for the first time ever. As they all drifted off to sleep, Max whispered, âGoodnight, Mo.â
âGoodnight, Max,â Mo whispered back. âIâm glad I met you.â
And from that night on, Max never worried about monsters under his bed. Because he knew that Mo, his new friend, was just afraid of the dark too. And together, they made the nighttime feel a little brighter.
The End.
