The Colours of the Rainbow
00:00 / 06:07

It was a bright, sunny afternoon, and Ria and her little brother Aarav were playing in their garden. The trees were swaying gently in the breeze, and flowers bloomed in every corner. Aarav was running around with his toy car, while Ria was lying on the grass, staring up at the sky.

“Ria, look! Look!” Aarav shouted, pointing towards the sky. His eyes were wide with excitement.

Ria sat up quickly. “Kya hua, Aarav? What’s happening?”

A beautiful rainbow had appeared right above them, stretching across the blue sky in all its colourful glory. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—each colour seemed to be glowing.

“Woh dekh, Ria! A rainbow!” Aarav was jumping with joy. “Par yeh kaise hota hai?”

Ria tilted her head, puzzled. She had seen rainbows many times before, but she never really knew how they were formed. “Mujhe bhi pata nahi, Aarav. Itna sundar hai, lekin kaise bana?”

Just then, their grandmother, Dadi, came out from the house. With a smile, she sat beside them and looked up at the rainbow too. “Kya baat hai, bachcho? Why so excited?”

“Dadi, dekho! A rainbow!” Aarav said, his voice full of wonder. “Lekin kaise bana?”

Dadi chuckled and looked at Ria. “Ria, do you know why rainbows appear after it rains? Tumhe pata hai yeh kis tarah se banta hai?”

Ria shook her head. “Nahi Dadi, aap batao.”

Dadi smiled and pointed to the rainbow. “Sunlight and rain have a special relationship. Jab suraj ki roshni aur baarish ki boondein milti hain, tab yeh rainbow banta hai. The sunlight passes through the water droplets in the air, and that’s when the magic happens!”

Ria raised her eyebrows. “Magic? Matlab?”

“Well, not magic exactly,” Dadi said, laughing softly. “It’s science! Sunlight is made up of many different colours, but we can’t see them normally because they mix together. Jab sunlight droplets se pass hoti hai, each colour bends differently. That’s why we see the different colours separately!”

“Arey, isse samjhne ke liye bohot zyada sochna padta hai, Dadi!” Aarav exclaimed, scratching his head. “So, the rainbow is like… a big, colourful puzzle?”

Ria nodded, now getting excited. “Oh, so every raindrop is like a tiny mirror that shows the colours of light?”

“Exactly!” Dadi said, patting Ria’s head. “Light travels in straight lines, but when it enters the raindrops, it bends, or ‘refracts.’ And when it exits the droplet, it spreads out, or ‘disperses,’ and that’s when we see the colours.”

Ria and Aarav looked at the rainbow in awe, trying to remember everything Dadi had said.

But suddenly, a cloud covered the sun, and the rainbow began to fade. “Oh no!” Aarav said, “It’s disappearing!”

Dadi laughed. “Don’t worry, beta. A rainbow will appear when the conditions are just right—sunlight and rain together. Agar ek cheez bhi missing ho, toh rainbow nahi dikhayi dega.”

Ria thought for a moment, then pointed to the ground. “Dadi, agar hum ek glass of water mein sunlight daalein, toh kya humein rainbow dikhega?”

Dadi’s eyes twinkled. “Acha sawaal hai! Agar tum ek glass of water ke andar sunlight daaloge, toh tumhe directly rainbow nahi dikhega. Par agar tum ek angle se dekho, toh tumko kuch colours dikhenge!”

Aarav’s eyes widened. “Wow! So, sunlight is like a magical box of colours!”

“Exactly!” Dadi said with a smile. “And every raindrop is like a tiny little box of colours, giving us a beautiful rainbow. Nature is full of such wonders.”

The cloud moved away, and the rainbow appeared again, even brighter than before.

Ria felt a sense of wonder and excitement. “Dadi, yeh rainbow toh sach mein magic jaisa lagta hai!”

Aarav looked up at the sky, his eyes shining. “Haan! Aur sab colours itne sundar lagte hain, Ria. Jaise ek painting ho!”

Ria smiled at her little brother. “So, next time we see a rainbow, we’ll know exactly how it’s made. It’s not magic, it’s science!”

Dadi laughed. “That’s the spirit! Science is full of magic. Sab kuch jo hum dekhte hain, uske peeche kuch na kuch logic hota hai.”

The rainbow stayed in the sky for a while, and the three of them sat there, soaking in the beauty of the colours. It wasn’t just a rainbow to them anymore—it was a magical lesson in the wonders of light, rain, and science.

As the sun began to set, Ria looked at the rainbow one last time and said, “I’m going to tell my friends tomorrow about how rainbows are made. They’ll be so surprised!”

Aarav nodded. “Aur main unko bataunga ki kaise har raindrop ek chhota rainbow banaata hai!”

Dadi smiled proudly. “Dekho, tum dono kitni smart ho gaye ho. Remember, science is everywhere, all around us. Just look closely, aur tumhe har cheez mein kuch naya seekhne ko milega.”

And with that, the three of them went inside, their minds full of new knowledge and excitement. Ria couldn’t wait to share her new discovery with everyone. The rainbow wasn’t just a beautiful sight—it was a magical lesson waiting to be learned!

Moral of the Story:
Science is all around us, and there’s always something new to learn if we just look closely. Every little thing in nature, like a rainbow, has a story to tell!
