About the Author
Lala Lajpat Rai, popularly known as the “Lion of Punjab,” was one of the most prominent leaders of India’s independence movement. Born in 1865 in Punjab, he became a leading nationalist figure, advocating for self-rule and inspiring generations of Indians to fight for freedom. As a lawyer, social reformer, and writer, Lajpat Rai’s contributions extended beyond politics—he also worked tirelessly for education and social upliftment. He founded several institutions including the Punjab National Bank and the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College. As part of the famous “Lal-Bal-Pal” trio, he stood alongside Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal as a powerful voice against British colonialism. Lajpat Rai was also an accomplished writer, penning works such as The Story of My Deportation and Young India, which captured the spirit of resistance and hope. Tragically, he succumbed to injuries sustained during a protest against the Simon Commission in 1928, but his martyrdom only fueled the independence movement further. Today, Lala Lajpat Rai is remembered not only as a political leader but as a visionary whose courage, writings, and sacrifices paved the way for India’s eventual freedom.
