Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score

DESCRIPTION

Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, ...

Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.

Too bad for Naomi, her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.

There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble, he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.

Book Review

Everyone thought Naomi was a runaway bride - but they were wrong. She didn’t run from something; she ran to someone. Her twin sister, Tina, needed her. And despite everything, Naomi showed up. One of the only two good things Tina ever did for Naomi. The second? Her daughter, Waylay - who became Aunt Naomi’s happy place in just a few days.

"Things We Never Got Over" by Lucy Score is a heartfelt, witty, and slow-burn romance that grabs you from the very first page and refuses to let go. Set in the small, quirky town of Knockemout, Virginia, this book is a perfect blend of emotional depth, laugh-out-loud moments, and sizzling chemistry.

Whether you're a longtime romance lover or dipping into the genre for the first time, this book feels like a warm embrace - full of chaos, charm, and second chances.

Story Line

In the small town of Knockemout, everyone initially mistook Naomi for her troublemaking twin sister, Tina. It wasn’t the warmest welcome - but somehow, Naomi stayed. She was framed as a runaway bride stuck in a new town, but instead of a fresh start, she finds herself stuck with an 11-year-old niece she didn’t know existed and no money, no job, and definitely no plan. Slowly, she built something for herself: a comfort zone, a home. From the very start, the tension between her and Knox was undeniable - breathtaking, even. And how she managed to turn that cold, guarded man into a soft-hearted protector? That alone made everyone see how remarkable she truly was. Little by little, Naomi became the town’s favorite. And more importantly, she built a life there - one that finally felt worthy of her.

All the characters in this,

  • Naomi Witt, a runaway bride who finds herself in a small town with no money and suddenly caring for her newfound niece

  • Knox Morgan, the grumpy local barber who reluctantly gets involved in Naomi's complicated situation.

  • Waylay Witt, Naomi's 11-year-old niece, who is intelligent and resourceful, Even though she is charming, she carries emotional trauma from being abandoned by her mother.

  • Nash Morgan, Knox's brother, a police officer and a resident of Knockemout. He plays a role in helping to protect Naomi and Waylay from the dangerous situation Tina is involved with. Not to mention, he had a crush on our runaway bride.

Not to mention every side character, who are charming in their own ways, like Lucian, Jeremiah, Sloane, Liza J, and Stef, are at their best.

The town of Knockemout and its quirky residents wrap around Naomi and her niece like a safety net. Themes of found family, community support, and unconditional love run deep throughout the story.

This book literally took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions, where I was sitting gripping the edge of my seat. At its core, this is a story about letting go of the past, facing your demons, and choosing to love- not despite your scars, but because of them. Naomi’s growth and Knox’s quiet depth add layers of poignancy to the romance.

After finishing this book, I completely fell in love with the town of Knockemout and every single one of its characters. Literally, I couldn't control my urge to book review this. It has a big cast, but Lucy Score did such an incredible job of making each character feel unique and real - I found myself falling in love with all of them.

One moment I was smiling, the next I was sad, then swept up in romance... and suddenly, overwhelmed by emotion. The emotional rollercoaster was beautifully done. By the end, I felt deeply satisfied and content.

The grumpy-sunshine romance, paired with a little tech-savvy sidekick, was such a joy to read. And even though I finished the book in a short time, the town quickly began to feel like home. The people felt like friends - even family.

Lucy Score’s writing style is simple but packed with emotion and depth. It made the story so easy to connect with and so hard to forget.

"Things We Never Got Over" is more than just a romance - it’s a story of resilience, rediscovery, and the messy, wonderful journey of falling in love when life doesn’t go as planned. Lucy Score has crafted a book that feels like coming home, reminding us that even when things fall apart, we can still choose to love - and to live fully.
