It was one of those typical Sunday afternoons when Aarav was too bored to even scroll through his phone. His friends had all disappeared into their own worlds, and his parents were busy arguing about which TV channel had the best cricket match. So, Aarav decided to take a walk to the forest behind his house, a place his dadi always warned him to stay away from.
âWoh jungle mein kuch toh ajeeb hai, Aarav. Donât go near that tree!â she had once said. Aarav had never paid much attention to it, dismissing it as one of those grandma stories meant to keep kids inside.
But today? Today, he felt like doing something out of the ordinary. Maybe it was the fact that he had nothing better to do. Or maybe it was the daring side of him waking up. Either way, he found himself standing at the edge of the forest, staring at the old tree that had always been there, towering over everything else.
As he stepped closer, something strange happened. The air seemed to grow colder, and he couldâve sworn he heard something. Aarav blinked and looked around. âKya yaar, Iâm losing it!â he muttered to himself, shaking his head.
But thenâhe heard it again.
âWho goes there?â
Aarav froze.
He turned around so fast, his head almost spun. No one was there. He looked up at the old tree, a massive, gnarled thing that had been standing there for as long as anyone could remember. There was something different about it today, though. A faint glow from the moon illuminated its twisted branches, and its bark seemed to have... a face?
Aarav took a step back. "Yeh kya tha?" he whispered, his heart racing.
Suddenly, the tree spoke again.
âDonât be scared, Aarav. I know youâve been sneaking around behind your parentsâ back again.â
Aarav blinked, completely confused. âWhaâwhat? How do you know my name? And what... what do you mean by âsneaking aroundâ?"
The treeâs voice was low and raspy, like a grandfather telling a spooky bedtime story. âI know a lot about you, Aarav. I know about the phone you borrowed from your dad last week. The one heâs still looking for.â
Aarav's eyes widened. "What? How do you know about that?!"
The tree chuckled. âI know all the secrets, Aarav. Your secrets, your friendsâ secrets, everyoneâs secrets. You see, Iâm not just any tree. I am the Whispering Tree, and Iâve been here for centuries, listening.â
Aaravâs head was spinning. He was used to weird stuff happening in movies, but this was real life. Was he dreaming?
âNo, no way. This is impossible,â he muttered, stepping back.
The treeâs branches creaked, and the ground beneath Aaravâs feet seemed to shake slightly. âItâs very real. In fact, Iâve been listening to you for a long time, Aarav. Like when you were thinking about the secret youâve been keeping from your best friend, Rohan.â
Aaravâs mouth dropped open. âWait. How do you know about that?â
The tree didnât reply. Instead, it continued in its raspy voice, âYou see, Aarav, this forest is full of secrets. People come here to hide thingsâsome big, some small. Youâve been trying to hide things, too, but Iâve heard it all. And now... youâre here.â
Aarav swallowed hard. âWhat do you want from me?â
âOh, nothing much. Just a little... trade,â the tree replied, sounding almost mischievous. âIf you want me to stop revealing your secrets to everyone around, I need a favor.â
Aarav wasnât sure if he should be terrified or curious, but his mind was racing. âWhat kind of favor?â
âI want you to solve a riddle,â the tree said. âIf you do, Iâll stop. If you donât, well... your secrets will be known far and wide. Everyone in your town will know everything.â
Aaravâs stomach dropped. This was crazy, even by his standards. But there was no way out. The riddle would decide everything. âOkay, fine. Whatâs the riddle?â
The treeâs voice grew even quieter, almost as if it was preparing to reveal a deep mystery. âI stand tall, I stand alone, and I am older than you know. My leaves are few, my roots run deep, and in the night, my secrets I keep. What am I?â
Aarav thought for a moment, his mind racing. The forest, the tree, the cryptic words. Then, it clicked.
âIt's you. You're the Whispering Tree, aren't you?â
The treeâs branches rustled, and it seemed to give an almost approving nod. âYouâre clever, Aarav. Very clever. Yes, I am the tree. But my riddle was more than just about me. It was about understanding the hidden thingsâseeing what others canât.â
Aarav exhaled, feeling a mix of relief and satisfaction. âSo... if I solved your riddle, youâll stop revealing my secrets?â
The treeâs voice softened. âYes. But remember, Aarav, everything has its price. Secrets are powerful, but truth is more powerful. Keep that in mind.â
With that, the tree fell silent. The night air felt lighter, and the tension lifted. Aarav looked around the forest, and for the first time, he realized it wasnât so spooky after all.
He smiled. âWell, that wasnât so bad, right?â
As he walked back home, Aarav couldnât help but feel a little wiser. The Whispering Tree had taught him something important: sometimes, itâs not about hiding your secrets, but understanding them.
And maybe, just maybe, heâd visit the tree again. But next time... with a better riddle to solve.
The End.
