It was another typical Saturday morning. Krish was lounging on the balcony, half-heartedly scrolling through his phone. “Yaar, every weekend it’s the same old story,” he muttered to himself. “Bored out of my mind... maybe I should go to the jungle again for some fresh air.”
You see, Krish wasn’t your average 16-year-old. He was more at home in the wilderness than anywhere else, with a love for adventure that kept him exploring places others wouldn't even dare to. Living near the outskirts of a forest had its perks. No Wi-Fi? No problem. Krish preferred the chirping of birds over endless TikTok scrolling any day.
“Mom, I’m heading out to the jungle,” he called, already grabbing his trusty backpack, filled with snacks and water bottles. His mom barely looked up from her phone, “Don’t get lost, beta.”
Krish grinned and shrugged. "I’m never lost in the jungle, Maa!"
The moment Krish entered the dense jungle, he felt at peace. The rustling of leaves, the distant sound of a tiger’s growl (which he prayed wasn't close), and the smell of damp earth—it all felt like home. He was just about to settle under a huge banyan tree when something caught his eye.
A loud trumpeting sound pierced through the air. “What the...?” Krish jumped up and followed the sound, which led him deeper into the forest.
His heart pounded. He was no stranger to the jungle, but there was something off about today. The sound of branches breaking, the hurried footsteps of something large... Something was not right.
“Wait a second…” Krish whispered to himself. He pushed through thick shrubs, careful to stay quiet. And then, he saw it.
A baby elephant! It was struggling, its small legs tangled in a trap set by poachers. The poor thing was panicking, its eyes wide with fear.
Krish’s breath caught in his throat. He had heard rumors about illegal poaching in these parts, but to see it in front of him? That hit different.
“Okay, Krish, focus. What do I do?” he thought, pacing around. He knew he couldn't just leave the poor animal there. But how was he going to get the trap off?
He noticed the poacher’s tracks leading deeper into the forest. “Poachers. They’ll be back,” Krish muttered under his breath. “I don’t have much time.”
The baby elephant let out another pitiful cry, snapping Krish out of his thoughts. He approached cautiously, his heart racing. “It’s okay. I’m gonna help you.”
With his heart pounding in his ears, Krish tried to calm the baby elephant, making soft noises. “Shh, baby, I’m here.” He pulled out his Swiss knife and carefully cut the ropes that held the trap together.
It was not easy. The rope was thick, and Krish’s hands were shaking from adrenaline. "Come on, come on!" he mumbled as sweat dripped down his face.
Just as the trap finally snapped open, Krish heard the unmistakable crack of branches from behind. He spun around.
Two poachers emerged from the trees. They weren’t expecting anyone, and their eyes widened when they saw Krish standing there.
“Hey! What the hell are you doing with our elephant?” one of them shouted, rushing towards Krish.
Krish didn’t even think twice. He grabbed the baby elephant’s trunk and pulled it toward the thick bushes. “Run!” he yelled.
The poachers were hot on their heels, shouting curses. But Krish wasn’t about to let them get the elephant.
“Come on, buddy, we can do this!” Krish said, trying to encourage the baby elephant, who was now trying to run on its own.
He could hear the poachers getting closer, their footsteps thudding behind him. Krish’s mind raced. “Okay, I have to get to the river. The poachers will never be able to cross it fast enough.”
Krish and the baby elephant sprinted through the dense jungle, dodging trees and rocks, Krish’s legs burning with every step. He could hear the poachers behind him, but he refused to look back.
Then, just as the poachers were about to catch up, Krish spotted the river up ahead. It was wide, but not impossible for the elephant to cross. “Almost there!” he shouted.
Without hesitation, Krish pushed the baby elephant into the water. It hesitated for a moment, but then, like Krish, it seemed to realize there was no turning back. Together, they swam across.
By the time the poachers reached the riverbank, they were out of sight. Frustrated and exhausted, they gave up.
Krish and the baby elephant reached the other side, panting heavily but safe. Krish leaned against a tree, smiling in relief. The baby elephant nudged him with its trunk, as if thanking him.
Krish laughed. “You’re welcome, little one. Now, let’s get you back home.”
With the poachers no longer a threat, Krish led the baby elephant to a nearby sanctuary, where it could be cared for properly. As he walked away, he couldn’t help but feel proud of what he had done.
Sometimes, bravery wasn’t about having superpowers or fighting monsters. Sometimes, it was just about doing what’s right, even when the odds were against you.
“Best Saturday ever,” Krish grinned, heading back home.
The End.
